Honors Project: “Finding Home”

Honors Course: Honors Composition I

Instructor: Olabisi Adenekan

My name is Helia Mokarrami. I am currently in my first semester at Oakton College and plan to transfer to a four year university to study Business, with an initial focus on Accounting. My long-term goal is to earn my CPA, while also exploring opportunities in sales, as I enjoy communication and working closely with people. During my time at Oakton, I have been working as a student employee and am an active member of the DECA Club. I am also on track to earn my Honors Scholar Designation by the end of next semester and look forward to continuing to grow academically and professionally through both coursework and campus involvement.

This "Finding Home" presentation focuses on my personal journey as an immigrant and explores the meaning of home, identity, and belonging. Working with Professor Adenekan was a deeply meaningful experience, she encouraged me to share my story and helped me realize that my voice and experiences matter. She pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and present my journey so that others who may have gone through similar experiences could feel seen, understood, and heard. Completing this project during my first semester helped me gain confidence, connect with new people, and feel proud of my journey. It allowed me to become more engaged within the college community and reminded me that personal stories have the power to create connection and understanding.
