Northwestern University Ph.D. Students Citlayi Villaseñor

April 30, 2:30pm-4:00pm (Hybrid) — Honors ‘Emerging Scholars’ Series: Citlayi Villaseñor

Join us for a discussion with Northwestern University Ph.D. Student Citlayi Villaseñor. In line with the Honors Program’s “Emerging Scholars” Series, Citlayi will discuss both her research, and their educational paths. This hybrid event will provide refreshments (courtesy of the Division of STEM) for those attending in-person. Register here to attend in-person (Lee 200, Des Plaines Campus). Register here to attend via Zoom.

Bio and Research Topic:

Citlayi is a sixth year PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences (IBiS) program in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Northwestern University and is mentored by Dr. Neha Kamat. The Kamat group studies how the biophysical properties of the membrane bilayer impact membrane protein folding and function to develop artificial cells and biological tools for therapeutic applications. Her projects focus on bacterial membranes and membrane protein folding, structure, and function in cell-free systems as well as in E. coli. After Citlayi earns her Ph.D., she plans to apply to teaching positions closer to her family in Southern California. Citlayi has served as the Treasurer and Academic Chair for the Northwestern University SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos, Hispanics and Native Americans in Science) chapter. She has also served on the executive board for the Diversity for Biological Sciences (DiBS) and IBiS Student Organization (ISO) student groups. Her presentation will highlight her family upbringing, scientific journey, PhD research projects in membrane biophysics and biochemistry, and her future career goals as an educator.
